Siblings Dynamics In Neuro Typical Vs. Autistic: A Comparative Study Of Emotional And Behavioral Challenges With The Influence Of Social Support

| Abstract | While most Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) research focuses on causes or parents, we still know very little about the emotional and behavioral struggles of the siblings. This study aims to bridge the gap by examining the emotional and behavioral challenges faced by siblings of individuals with the diagnosis of ASD in comparison to siblings of neurotypical individuals; moderating the role of perceived social support on these challenges. A quantitative survey-based approach was employed, involving N = 300 participants aged 14–17 years, recruited through convenience sampling from across Karachi. Participants were divided into two groups: siblings of individuals with ASD (Group A) and siblings of neurotypical individuals (Group B). Standardized measures were used to collect data followed by statistical analyses. Findings revealed that Group A (M=49.080, SD= 6.162) scored significantly higher on emotional and behavioral difficulties (M=30.626, SD=11.915) p < .001. Whereas, perceived social support was higher in Group B (M=356.346, SD=50.747) (M=279.313, SD=33.734). Moreover, perceived social support was negatively correlated with emotional and behavioral problems in both groups (p < .01) but it is stronger in Group B. Further the perceived social support significantly buffered the impact of sibling group on emotional and behavioral difficulties (B = -0.072, p < .001), suggesting that social support reduced the severity of challenges among siblings of individuals with ASD. These findings highlight the importance of stronger support networks to protect the vulnerable siblings of autistic individuals. |
